Safety

General and safety information for employees and students working in the High-Voltage Laboratory.

Visitors and other non-instructed persons (facility management, external workers, ...) have to be accompanied by an instructed person (HVL staff instructed for the particular laboratory of interest).

The most important electrical safety rules are documented Downloadhere (PDF, 610 KB), the detailed HVL safety concept (Version 2022) can be found Downloadhere (PDF, 3 MB).

General

Careful handling of laboratory equipment and respect towards each other are essential basics for successful and enjoyable working/researching and are requested from all HVL members. Besides using common sense, the following rules have to be respected:

  1. Working in any of the laboratories of the HVL is only permitted after appropriate instruction by an authorized person (group leader (Christian Franck), safety responsible (Philipp Simka), or supervisor (scientific staff, only for students)).
  2. Mutual respect and responsible everyday interaction are followed by everyone (Read more: ITET, ETH)
  3. A safe and enjoyable working environment is a collaborative task and shared responsibility. Make sure you understand and act according to the given rules and always apply common sense if not regulated explicitly: notify defect equipment, refill consumables if they run out, ....

Safety

We are working in an environment with potentially dangerous equipment such as high voltages, high currents, liquid and pressurized gases, lasers, X-rays and chemicals. It is thus important to work carefully and to respect the safety regulations.

  1. It is forbidden to work under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  2. Wearing and using your personal protective equipment is mandatory.
  3. Disabling any safety installations in strictly forbidden.
  4. It is not permitted to alter any of the permanent building wiring or piping, or the power supplies of laboratory equipment.
  5. All HVL staff and students receive general basic safety training and (on a need basis) dedicated personalised trainings. Trainings must always be documented and signed by trainer and trainee.
